Tracking the rapid rise of solar installations in 2023 to 2025
Preliminary trends in solar installations across South Africa are already telling an interesting story
GEOTERRAIMAGE has reached the third update of its South African National Solar Installation Dataset, reflecting the latest growth in solar trends.
Data from the first round of installations in 2022 revealed clear socio-economic patterns.
According to household income data from the Neighbourhood Lifestyle Index®© (NLI®©), most solar systems were installed in middle- to high-income neighbourhoods.
Very few significant solar installations occurred in lower-income neighbourhoods. In the latest update (2025), this general pattern appears to hold, although recent growth was mostly within the middle-income group. This suggests that high-income groups acted as the early adopters of solar installations.
Early indications suggest a potential up to 70% increase in solar installations in certain areas since the initial rollout.
An updated dataset of national statistics will be released soon, providing a more detailed view of this growth and the evolving trends across income groups and regions.
